Stormy Night

I love a good storm in the daytime when I can actually see it. Watching the skies turn from a beautiful bright day to darkening skies that makes it seem like night. Seeing tree branches bending and swaying in the wind and the rain that starts out lightly then comes down harder and harder until you can barely see out the window. And then its over and the bright sun comes out again and the day is beautiful once more. But a storm at night? Not so much. You can’t see a thing but you can hear it swirling around outside; hear the knocking of something against the door or side of the house making you wonder what is happening. You want to check it out but the noises leave you rooted in your spot. Its so dark out that you probably wouldn’t be able to see anything at all. You wonder if there may be damage to the house or a vehicle but until its light out you have no way to check for damage.

One night as my husband and I listened to the storm outside, our dog Lucy didn’t like it one bit and took up residence next to me in the recliner. She tucked herself so close she pushed her body up against my thigh as though she knew I would protect her. Her head lay on my thigh until the next clap of thunder came and she lowered her head to hide. Our precious dog hates storms and loud noises and when those things happen I’m her go to person. Any other time she’s all about my husband and very much a spoiled little dog. 🐢 (guilty βœ‹) Watching her tuck herself up next to me, I thought about Jesus and how He watches over us even in the midst of the storm.

And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm.

Luke 8:24

Can you imagine Jesus coming awake from a deep sleep and with the sleep still in His eyes sitting up looking out over the waters and commanding the wind and water to calm? I can almost picture Him calming the storm then looking at his disciples with love saying something like this: “Where is your faith? Do you really think the Father is going to let anything happen while I’m resting?” And then using the moment to teach them to trust rolling over and going back to sleep. As He walks with us through the storms of life, we can trust that He will calm the storms and shield us from the fiery darts that come our way.

One of my favorite sayings is “God’s got this”. And He does as long as we relinquish it to Him. God bless! πŸ’—
