Devotional ~How You Hear

How we hear. When I first read this verse as part of my devotional only the first part was given: therefore take heed how you hear. I was struck with one thought: How did I miss the part about how I hear? It is easy to miss something when distractions are around you. In order for me to hear properly what the Lord is speaking to me, I need to get in my prayer room. (space, closet, wherever you can be alone with you and the Lord and no distractions.) I must admit this is one area that I struggle with. Why? Because honestly I let the distractions early in my Christian walk interfere and didn’t developed the proper discipline to truly understand what it meant to spend time alone with the Lord. But I’m working on making it a daily routine and not a struggle. 😊

To truly hear from the Lord we need to find a quiet place ~ a place where we can shut out the distractions of the world and be still. No distractions. Just being still, quiet, and listening to His voice. As we hear Him speak to us, He will tell us things meant just for us. Things that only we can do and as we obey Him; He will entrust us with more. There may be times when we don’t hear Him speak and that’s okay. We just have to remember that He may not always speak and not to become discouraged. The second part of the verse may be a reminder of what can happen if we don’t make time to get in our quiet place and listen to the Lord.

Lord, it is so easy to make excuses and let the distractions of the world interfere with our quiet time with You. May we have ears to hear Your still small voice as we make the time to meet You in our quiet place. Create in us a burning desire to want to spend more time with You. In Your holy and precious name, amen.

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

  1. Amen 🙏🏽 to your prayer if having that burning desire to spend more time with God. Listening to His voice comes with continual and consistent practice of spending time with Him. It is something I too am working on Marie.

  2. You’ve provided an insightful thought here, Marie. “How” we hear God matters! I remember the Citizen’s Band (CB) radio craze back in the 70’s. My dad had one in his pickup truck, but there were so many people talking at once, it sounded like the crowd at a football game! Dad discovered it was easier to talk with others at non peak times. And it’s the same with God. I find it’s better to talk with Him (and listen) before or after my often busy days begin. Great post. Thank you for sharing this! Blessings.

    1. Hey, I remember those days! My dad had one in his car as well. I’m with you on the talking and listening to God, for me, I find my time tends to be more toward the evening hour. You are most welcome for the sharing, it is most definitely all God. Blessings!

  3. Thanks Jean. I’ve been thinking about this lately, rebuking the spirit of distraction and praying for ability to concentrate more. Now I’ll go to a really quiet place. Have a good day!
